How did you discover urban planning?
I actually discovered urban planning by researching graduate degrees on The University of Utah’s website. I had heard of urban planning during my bachelor’s but had not looked into it much until I was looking into graduate programs. When reading into the MCMP program, I loved how it involved smart growth, sustainability, and ecological thinking. I can apply my passions from my bachelor’s degree and grow them with this graduate program, it was perfect for me.
Why did you choose the MCMP program at U of Utah?
I am from Utah and have always loved Salt Lake City and the U’s campus. When thinking about graduate school, the U of U was the first place I looked. Finding a degree that suited me so well was icing on the cake. In addition, I also admire the way the program is set up for students. Having the independence to choose a large amount of electives to fit your interest is really awesome and makes this program really unique to me. On top of that, having smaller class sizes is great and much more personable.
What are your career goals?
My career goal is to be a sustainability planner and to earn a graduate sustainability certificate while completing the MCMP program. There is a lot of sustainability potential when it comes to city and metropolitan planning. I would love to be a leader in smart growth, green infrastructure, urban farming, climate change mitigation, etc. My ultimate goal would be to move to the Pacific North West and work in large cities like Portland or Seattle.
Tell us one thing most people don’t know about you.
I have a tattoo of my favorite band on my arm, I even got to meet them and show it off. They thought it was sweet, I think they are pretty sweet. Check out Penny & Sparrow if you have not heard of them.
